Today, many of the patients our Merced orthodontics practice serves are adults. The reason for this is that an increasing number of adults have realized the many social and professional benefits that come with investing in smile makeovers. And, more and more adults appreciate that there are now more discreet choices in orthodontic appliances like clear braces and translucent aligners that don’t involve wearing highly visible metal braces that are often associated with kids.

At Orthodontics Exclusively, we believe everyone deserves excellent orthodontic health. While having a beautiful smile is a big part of that, it is not the only component to strong overall oral health. The jaws are also a major part of orthodontics. While most peoples’ jaws work just fine and do not cause trouble, sometimes people can develop Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, otherwise known as TMJ or TMD.

Now that the spring season is here, many of our school-aged patients will be suiting up to play baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and other outdoor sports. This is a great time for us to remind all our athletic patients and their families of how very important it is to protect your teeth when playing sports or while participating in any activity that poses a risk of injury to the mouth.

Many ask how you are supposed to maneuver a toothbrush and floss through your mouth? While it may seem difficult, it is extremely important, as teeth are extra susceptible to decay during treatment and keeping them clean and healthy is absolutely critical to successful treatment. Accordingly, here are a few tips for maintaining proper oral hygiene with braces.

In the past, many people were reluctant to see an orthodontist because they did not want to be called names like "metal mouth" or “tinsel teeth”. But the need for wearing bulky metal braces has long passed as the field of orthodontics has changed considerably and for the better! Now, thanks to so many advancements made in orthodontics, many doctors, including your local Los Banos, Merced, & Fresno orthodontists, offer a variety of orthodontic appliances including new and improved metal braces that are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive than the metal braces used in the past.

This summer, I read a book called, “The Ultimate Guide to a Beautiful Smile”. It was a very revealing series of stories told from kids, teenagers, and even young adults who are made fun of in school, on the playground, or even worse, today, on the internet, just because they have crooked teeth. These stories only confirmed what my patients have been telling me for years, relating stories of how they used to hide their faces, never smile, or how they were afraid to speak up in class for fear of everyone staring at their crooked teeth. Parents would be amazed and a little sad to hear what their kids tell me about the cruelty and ridicule they encounter from classmates.
